Our History
In 1782, after four years of training in Paris, Johann Jacob Storz® returned to his hometown of Tuttlingen, Germany,
to start a knife-making industry that soon became the
major craft of Tuttlingen. Johann Storz’s fine design and workmanship of table knives soon made his products desired in the finer homes of Germany.
Adam Storz, grandson of Johann Jacob Storz, also traveled to the French capital, this time to learn the making of surgical instruments. He too returned to Tuttlingen to help start this trade there. The knife makers who had been trained by his grandfather were quick to enter this new field, and soon Tuttlingen was also known for its instrument industry.
His son, Charles R. Storz, born in 1872, learned the surgical instrument-making trade thoroughly from his father and added to his experience in the design and manufacture of instruments at Wurzburg, one of the early medical centers of Germany. Charles R. Storz immigrated to the United States and founded the Storz Instrument Company in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was actively designing and supervising surgical instrument manufacture until his retirement in 1960.
